Step 1: Calculate your power load

List every appliance you want to run during a power cut and note its wattage:

Step 2: Decide your backup duration

How long do you need backup power? This depends on your area:

- Minimal cuts (30 min–1 hr): Whitefield, Electronic City, Sarjapur — a 100Ah battery is usually enough - Moderate cuts (1–2 hrs): Marathahalli, Bannerghatta, Yelahanka — go for 150Ah - Frequent cuts (2–4 hrs): Outskirts, new layouts, areas near construction — consider 180Ah–200Ah

The formula: Backup hours = (Battery Ah × Battery Voltage × 0.7) ÷ Total Load

For a 150Ah/12V battery with 400W load: (150 × 12 × 0.7) ÷ 400 = 3.15 hours

Step 3: Choose between flat plate and tubular

Flat Plate batteries: - Lower price (₹4,000–₹8,000) - Good for areas with infrequent power cuts - Shorter lifespan (2–3 years) - Faster charging time

Tubular batteries: - Higher price (₹8,000–₹18,000) - Built for frequent and long power cuts - Longer lifespan (4–5 years) - Better deep-discharge recovery - Less water topping needed

Important: The inverter voltage (12V or 24V) must match your battery configuration. A 24V inverter needs two 12V batteries connected in series.

Maintenance tips to extend battery life

A well-maintained inverter battery can last 4–5 years:

1. Check water levels monthly — Top up with distilled water only. Never use tap water. 2. Keep terminals clean — Apply petroleum jelly to prevent corrosion. 3.
